Systems-based
THERAPY.
PEOPLE CAN
RECALIBRATE.

I work with adults who are still functioning, still showing up, but privately managing something that isn’t working the way it should. My approach is direct, structured, and built around a systems view: how you think, feel, act, and physically hold up are all connected.

THE FOUNDATION

People change systems.

I’m interested in the system producing the problem. Thoughts that loop, emotional responses that feel automatic, habits that persist even when you know better: these are patterns. And patterns can be interrupted.

You can change how you function. It takes work, and it’s rarely work you can do alone.

THE BELIEF

Loneliness destroys. Connection heals.

Disconnection (from other people, from your own values, from a sense of purpose) is one of the most corrosive forces I see in clinical work. It shows up in anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, and the particular exhaustion of capable people who have no one they can actually talk to.

The goal: think clearer, act more consistently, and function more sustainably.

HOW I WORK

Four things that shape every session
Directness over comfort
I'm not going to tell you what you want to hear if it isn't useful. The most respectful thing I can offer is honesty about what I’m seeing, what’s driving the problem, and what it’ll take to change it. I can be direct and warm in the same breath.
Structure with flexibility
Sessions are goal-directed. We know what we're working on and why. But if the structure isn’t serving you, we adjust it.
Insight isn't enough
Understanding why you do something is the beginning. The work is building the skills to do something different, until the new pattern becomes the default.
The goal is that you won't need me
The endpoint is self-sustaining systems: recognizing your own patterns, regulating your own responses, applying what you've built without needing a weekly session to hold it together.

About Tim

The person you’d be
working with.

I’m Tim Coughlin, a licensed clinical social worker in Wisconsin (LCSW) and Ohio (LISW), and a registered telehealth provider in Florida. My clinical foundation is CBT, with training in DBT, ERP, ACT, and psychodynamic work.

I came to therapy from somewhere else. Before clinical work, I led teams in health tech, ran a statewide market launch for a care-coordination company, and worked on large-scale community initiatives at United Way. I still think like someone who’s run operations: find the system, find where it’s breaking, fix that.

That background shapes the work. A lot of the people I see are in demanding roles: founders, managers, clinicians, engineers. They’re still producing, and they can tell something isn’t operating the way it should. I know that pressure from the inside.

Outside of sessions, I’m a husband and a dad. When I can, I’m hiking, camping, or traveling somewhere I haven’t been yet.

Background

Clinically trained. Practically oriented.

My clinical work spans crisis intervention, trauma, and evidence-based modalities for anxiety, OCD, and mood. I keep my caseload small so I can focus on quality of care.

You’ll get structured, honest, evidence-based care.
